Mission Hospital Ranked Among Nation’s Best Hospitals – One of only 29 Hospitals in the United States to Receive Top Ranking

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (August 17, 2018) – Mission Hospital has been recognized as one of the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its 2018-2019 edition of Best Hospitals. Mission was one of only the 29 hospitals, less than 1 percent of the hospitals evaluated, that got the top rating in all nine procedures and conditions. Mission Hospital was the only hospital in North Carolina or South Carolina to receive this recognition.

As part of its Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals from across the nation for their handling of nine important and common clinical conditions: two chronic illnesses – chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart failure – and seven surgical procedures: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and knee or replacement hip replacement. In each clinical condition in which a hospital had treated enough patients to be evaluated, the hospital received a rating of high performing, average or below average.

“This recognition reflects the commitment and hard work of our dedicated caregivers to our western North Carolina community,” said Jill Hoggard Green, PhD, RN, COO of Mission Health and President of Mission Hospital. “We are proud of our team members who always seek to ensure we provide the safest, highest quality care to our patients.”

“Managing these important clinical conditions is a complex, team-based process,” said Ruth Zyry, RN, Chief Operating Officer, Mission Hospital. “From our talented physicians and nurses to our dedicated environmental care technicians, every single member of the Mission Hospital team lives daily their dedication, compassion, commitment to excellence and focus on safety and quality.”
The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

“For nearly 30 years, U.S. News has strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “By providing the most comprehensive data available, we give patients and their physicians’ information to support their search for the best care across a range of specialties.”
